Grammar: The Structure of ‘Used to do’

subject auxiliary did not main verb infinitive
+ I     used to do.
- I did not use to do.
  Did you   use to do
If we say something used to happen we are talking about repeated events and actions in the past, usually things that happened a long time ago and are now finished. To express this we can use ‘used to’.
I used to smoke. ////// past present future

Look at these examples.

the past the present
She used to work in a shop. Now she works in a bank.
He used to watch a lot of TV. Now he doesn't watch much TV.
They used to be married. Now they are divorced.
There used to be a cinema here. Now there is a supermarket here.
I didn't use to go swimming. Now I go swimming.

We also use it for something that was true but no longer is.

Examples:

There used to be a cinema in the town but now there isn't.

She used to have really long hair but she's had it all cut off.

I didn't use to like him but now I do.

!Note -The general rule is when there is did or didn't in the sentence, we say use to (without d) when there is no did or didn't in the sentence, we say used to (with d).

1 Match the sentences with "used to".
