Adults

In a survey of 2,000 adults, a third had not bought a new book in the previous 12 months. 34% said they did not read books.

96% said they had read something in the past seven days, whether books, magazines, newspapers or text messages. Reading material varied according to age: 70% of 16 to 24-year-olds had read a magazine, compared to 59% of 55 to 64-year-olds; 33% of 16 to 24-year-olds had read fiction, compared to 43% of 55 to 64-year-olds.

A survey of 1,000 people for Bedtime Reading Week 2002 found the most popular place to read was in bed (65% of the sample). 25% relax with a book in the bath. 10% take a book to the loo (mainly men), almost half like to read on holiday and a third read on the journey to work. Over a third of those interviewed said they wish they had more time to read.

A survey by Book Marketing for World Book Day 2001 found that the average British reader reads for between 4 and 6 hours a week. In Scotland the average is 5.8 hours. 54% said they read for relaxation or to relieve stress

Children and families

In 2003, a survey of nine and 11-year-olds found that, compared with pupils of the same age in 1998, children were more confident readers, but enjoyed it less. Boys in particular showed a decline in interest in reading for pleasure. (National Foundation for Educational Research, 2003).

From the age of six girls read more books than boys and this trend continues through theirlives. Girls are three times more likely than boys to borrow books from a public library. Nine out of ten mothers say they read to their offspring at least once a week. 70% say they do so every day.

There are no checks or balances. No one involved in the process is protecting the rights of innocent Americans - protection that is ensured by judicial review of search warrants.

Information is the most valuable resource on the planet. It allows people to make informed decisions, learn and better themselves.

The most popular type of book for men is thrillers, while for women it is romance. A
minority of both sexes read factual books. A third or the women surveyed read mysteries.

The most enthusiastic readers are those who read romances. Amongst the mystery fans, women read more than men.

By far the largest proportion of books are borrowed from a library. Book clubs are becoming more popular.

In conclusion, this survey indicates that men and women have different reading tastes. Women also tend to read more than men..
