12.2. School of Leisure & Food Management

Available via full-time study, part-time study and distance learning.

The MSc* in International Tourism Management focuses on international dimensions of the tourism industry, with prominence given to the issues and approaches involved in managing an industry with an important and increasing global reach. This global industry is growing quickly, with the World Tourism Organisation forecasting average annual growth rates to the year 2010 of 3.77 per cent. This creates many opportunities for well qualified managers with a specific knowledge of the global tourism industry.

There is an emphasis on tourism practices that are economically efficient and profitable, socially responsible and environmentally friendly. To achieve this, managers in the tourism industry need to have an understanding of complex, wide ranging and interdisciplinary relationships and management functions.

Consequently, the course takes an integrated approach to tourism management. It also takes account of the diversity of management roles and career routes, and looks at relationships between the different elements in the diverse tourism environment.

Who should apply?

Students who wish to develop a career in the increasing number of tourism business and organisations which operate in several countries.

The course is also of interest to students who work in tourist destinations which attract visitors from different countries with distinct cultural expectations and values.
