Overview

Anesthesia is the administration of medication to allow medical procedures to be done without pain. There are four types of anesthesia: general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, local anesthesia and twilight sleep. Local anesthesia is most commonly associated with dental procedures, where the gum is numbed with an injection of medication. Local anesthesia is produced by the application or injection of a drug to eliminate pain in a specific area in the mouth. Lidocaine is the most common local anesthetic that dentists use. There are two kinds of numbing injections: block injections and ifiltration ones.
