Nowadays the Irkutsk State Railway Transport University has become one of the largest higher educational institutions of Siberia. The University is situated in Irkutsk not far from the railway station and the Angara River in a very beautiful spot, because there is a small forest left intact just aside. The University has several buildings; some are quite new and modern, and all of them are well quipped and very beautiful. The view from the upper floors’ windows on the river and a large part of Irkutsk is splendid. The students of the University have very favourable conditions for study and research; they have all necessary instruments, new and modern equipments, and apparatus. There are all sorts of laboratories, including computer ones, a big library, reading rooms. There is a large Spots complex, too. Nearby there stands comfortable students’ dormitory where everybody who needs may live at a moderate price.
More than 7,000 students are studying at the University, among them more than 4,000 students at the day department and about 3,000 students at the extra-mural department. Also there are about 60 foreign students studying at the University. And the number of offered academic programs and admitted students is constantly growing. The University has 3 departments now: the day department (including the department of foreign students), the extra-mural department and the Institute of further education. The University has 25 special departments in seven faculties: Computer Technologies and Information Systems Faculty, The Railway Construction Faculty, The Railway Operation Faculty, Electromechanical Faculty, The Economics Faculty, The Humanities Faculty, The Electro technical Faculty. The students can choose from more than 20 academic programs; Personal management, Accounting, Analysis and Audit, Finance and Credit, Anti-crisis Management, Economics and Enterprise Management, Computer Science and Information Technology, Transportation Management, Railway Transport Automation and Telecommunication, Railway Transport Electric Power Supply, Railway Construction, Track and Trackage, Railway Bridge and Tunnel Construction, Cars, Railway Electric Transport, Quality Control and Diagnostics Methods and Devices (full-time study only), Quality Management (full-time study only), Mechatronics (mechanics and electronics) (full-time study only), Expertise and Estate Management (full-time study only), Environmental Protection (full-time study only),Technological Process Safety (full-time study only), Software Development (full-time study only), Complex Computer-Aided System Security (full-time study only), Management (full-time study only).
